Civil Engineer I - Project Engineer

We are seeking a full-time Project Civil Engineer I to join our team. This position is responsible for working with Project Managers and the team preparing reports and developing plans and cost estimations for engineering design projects. This position assists in the preparation of site civil construction documents and is responsible for ensuring professional, consistent, timely and effective customer service.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analyze survey reports, maps, and other data to plan projects

  • Consider costs, government regulations, potential environmental hazards, and other factors in planning stages and risk analysis

  • Compile and submit permit applications to local, state, and federal agencies verifying that projects comply with various regulations

  • Provide cost estimates for materials, equipment, or labor to determine a project’s economic feasibility

 

 

 

  • Use design software to plan and design transportation systems, hydraulic systems, and structures in line with industry and government standards

  • Present findings to the public on topics such as bid proposals, environmental impact statements, or property descriptions

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering

  • EI or EIT registration currently or within 6 months and a desire to ultimately become a PE.

  • 1-4 years’ experience required.

  • Knowledge of technical software.

  • Experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D

  • Working knowledge of site-related design

  • Ability to apply civil engineering concepts to problem solving

  • Ability to work well in a team environment

  • Well organized with the ability to multi-task and prioritize work

  • Knowledge of the practical application of best engineering practices

  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, and government regulations

 

Preferred

  • Experience using Autodesk products, storm water modeling software applications preferred

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. This position is physically located in Columbus and no relocation is offered. 

Civil Engineer II - Project Manager

We are seeking a full-time Project Engineer to join our team. This position is responsible for planning, directing, or coordinating activities for private development projects with emphasis on institutional, medical office, educational, and large commercial projects. The focus of this position is to ensure that all required facilities are provided concurrent with development to standards. The position provides supervision, leadership, direction, and motivation for staff engineers and CAD Technicians. Responsible for ensuring professional, consistent, timely and effective customer service.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the coordination and overall integration of technical activities in engineering projects

  • Direct, review, or approve project design changes

  • Confer with management and staff to discuss project specifications or procedures

  • Develop and explain proposals, reports, or findings to clients

  • Consult or negotiate with clients to develop project scope

  • Prepare budgets, bids, contracts, and construction estimates

  • Assess project feasibility by analyzing technology, resource needs, and market demand

  • Collaborate to develop project resources with regard to staff

 

  • Develop or implement policies, standards, or procedures for engineering and technical work

  • Plan or direct the installation, testing, operation, maintenance, or repair of facilities or equipment

  • Perform administrative functions, such as reviewing or writing reports, approving expenditures, enforcing rules, or purchasing of materials or services

  • Collaborate with management to establish technical goals

  • Evaluate environmental regulations or social pressures related to environmental issues to inform strategic or operational decision-making

  • Solicit project support by conferring with officials or providing information to the public

  • Develop or implement programs to improve sustainability or reduce environmental impacts

  • Evaluate the environmental impacts of engineering and development activities

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

 

  • Knowledge of the practical application of best engineering practices

  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models

  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, and government regulations

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience, P.E.

  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio

  • High level of experience using Autodesk products, storm water modeling software applications

 

Preferred

  • Additional registration in additional states

  • LEED accreditation is preferred

Survey Technician

Position summary:  Primary job duty is making surveying observations utilizing our robotic instruments. The individual will perform various tasks associated with our work in the field such as: opening manholes, cutting brush, locating survey markers, laying out points for construction staking as well as other survey related tasks.  The ideal candidate shall have an interest in construction and development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collect field data and measurements necessary for design of construction projects, including topographic information, utility information, site features and photographs, and boundary information for commercial, roadway, residential,

  • Operate survey equipment such as a robotic total stations and global positioning system (GPS) receivers.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS: The successful candidate for this position will have, at minimum, the following skills, experience and characteristics.

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Software required.

  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations with a handheld calculator or similar device required.

  • Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, and drawings required.

  • Must have ability to understand and follow directions.

  • Capacity to operate electronic devices required.  Electronic devices include laptops, tablets, smart phones, survey equipment, global positioning equipment, or similar devices.

  • Good verbal and written skills, attention to detail, and organizational skills and demonstrated experience interacting with others.

  • High level of personal integrity and personal and business ethics.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma Required.

  • Bachelor or technical degree in surveying, surveying technology, engineering technology, or construction sciences is a plus.

  • Prior field survey experience is a plus but is not required.

  • Bird+Bull is willing to train candidates with the willingness and aptitude for learning as part of a mentorship program that will transition into an independent role.

  • Bird+Bull is willing to provide training under the Certified Survey Technician (CST) program offered by the National Society of Professional Surveyors.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • This is a field position working outdoors on construction and development related sites.  Field work is performed year round so candidates must be prepared to work in inclement weather.  Professionalism and discretion are required.

  • Some work will be completed on active roadways and construction sites.  Capacity to adhere to safety protocols is a must.

  • Must have dependable transportation and valid driver’s license and insurance.

  • Must be able to pass a background check/drug test/driving record check.
